Guitar Palette
See chords, notes, and scales as they fit on the fretboard
——————————————————————
• The Fretboard
All the really good stuff in FretPet happens on the
Fretboard. Be sure to have your guitar in your lap
when you start playing with this palette.
• The fretboard is displayed so that the head - or
"nut end" - of the guitar at the top of the window.
Notes always ascend in pitch from the top of the
window to the bottom.
• Fret 0 is referred to as the Open String.
• There are 14 more frets labeled to the right of
the guitar.
• The window is resizable and any part of the
fretboard can be viewed using the scrollbar.
• There are always 6 strings visible.
For bass guitar ignore the 2 highest strings.
• Conventionally we call the string with the
lowest pitch the Bottom String and the string
with the highest pitch the Top String.
( This has nothing to do with the
orientation of the guitar itself! )
• Use the FretStuff->Guitar Image menu to choose
an axe to suit your mood.
• Note Dots
Notes appear on the fretboard as color-coded dots:
◊ Note is in the Current Scale
◊ Root Note of the Current Scale
◊ Unplayed (or unplayable) note
◊ Note is not in the Current Scale
• Double-click on the fretboard to toggle a note.
• Pressing <SPACE> will also toggle a note.
• Triple-click to add a triad to the chord.
• <OPTION>-triple-click to remove a triad.
• Blinkers
Blinking dots correspond to the Current Tone highlighted in the
Scale Palette.
• Fret Cursor
The Fret Cursor is indicated by a rotating box. The position of the
Fret Cursor determines where a note will be inserted on the fretboard.
[ The note at the Fret Cursor is also displayed in the Info Palette, along
with other information. ]
• Click and drag on the fretboard to move the Fret Cursor.
• You can also use <OPTION><ARROWS> move the Fret Cursor.
• String Tones
The notes that correspond to each open string are displayed at the bottom
of the window. These will change depending on the tuning.
• Select tunings from the FretStuff->Guitar Tuning menu.
There are also three gadgets in the Guitar
Window. From Top to Bottom:
• ◊ "Cobain" Stringing Gadget
Click here to reverse the stringing of the guitar… just like all the dead
musicians do. If the arrow points to the right then the string tones ascend
from left to right. If the arrow points to the left then the rightmost string
is the low note and the notes ascend from right to left.
• You can also reverse the strings with < ◊><\>.
• ◊ Chord Bracket Gadget
Turn the Chord Bracket on or off.
• You can select Chord Bracket from the FretStuff menu or use <◊ ><B>.
• Clicking to the left of the guitar neck will also turn the bracket on.
• ◊ Scale Note Gadget
By clicking this gadget you can move the Fret Cursor to the next note on the
neck that corresponds to the Scale Note.
• The Chord Bracket
Dots appear over the whole neck, showing you the many possible positions
◊ where you can play your new chord. But of course you can't play them all at
once. The Chord Bracket allows you to choose a region of the neck in which
to play your chord. The program then figures out the best set of notes - one
note per string - to play. Not too shabby.
• Click outside of the bracket to jump it to a new position.
• Click and drag in the middle of the bracket to move it.
• Click and drag the ends of the bracket to resize it.
• The < [ [ BRACKET ] ] > keys also move the bracket.
